Normally, coveting is considered wrong.
There are lots of things that we ought not covet.
Our neighbor’s house.
Our neighbor’s grass, Our neighbor’ fun truck.
The list could go on and on.
Paul, however, gives us permission to covet in his epistle to the Corinthian saints.
Permission to seek earnestly to be zealous for.
“But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet show I unto you a more excellent way.”
1 Corinthians 12:31
In every dispensation, spiritual gifts have followed the true church of Christ on the earth.
We might be so bold as to say that if there are not spiritual gifts abundant and alive in the church today,
it would not be the true church.
I share my belief that they are indeed present and available.
They are one of the mighty privileges of being a citizen in the Savior’s kingdom.
They provide for a more excellent way to “those that love Him,
and keep all His commandments…that all may be benefitted…”
I love the line “that all may be benefitted.”
I believe a famous fellow once penned in a poem the line, “No man is an island.”
As latter-day saints, we would say: “nor should he feel like he is.”
We either all go back together, or none of us go at all.
Each of us are endowed with gifts that not only assist us in our return,
but more importantly to encourage and enable others to do the same.
I had a friend looking for some advice for another friend last night.
This man is searching for something better.
He feels like he has nothing that lights his fire.
Money is not satisfying.
His job is not doing it for him.
There is healing that needs to happen and forgiving will be central to it.
But for the most part, days come and go without any bright significance to remember them by.
I know everything is not simple and easy, but I do believe there is a key to a happier path in these promises.
I would say to this good brother..
My friend, there is a more excellent way.
You are on the cusp of the realm of angels.
Come on in.
Come seeking for gifts.
Come believe.
Come practice the healers art.
Come bless with the tongue of angels.
Come prophesy.
Come bless and speak in the name of the Lord.
Come hear the words of those who know.
Come feel the fire of faith burn brightly.
Come mourn with those that mourn.
Come with comfort for the comfortless.
Come learn wisdom.
Come and find knowledge.
Come discover mysteries.
Come and offer promises.
Come and claim your own.
Come see the great things God can do.
Come witness the workings of mighty miracles.
Come and enjoy an unending Christmas morning.
Come and be zealous for the best gifts.
Come, live up to your privileges and you will find satisfaction even abundance.
Come and enjoy a more excellent way.
